You've done all the right things, that 'Macbook Pro OS Install Disc 1' _in theory_ should run the Installer and you'd be off and running - sounds like it's either not the right disc for that machine or is faulty. I'd say run a DVD Lens cleaner through it but then your other DVD mounts fine so unlikely that would make any difference.
Might be worth asking this client of yours if they have another Install DVD as they possibly gave you the wrong one (it should have come with two DVD's normally the second has Apps and Optional Installers on it). If they can't supply another DVD then $29 for Snow Leopard is probably your best bet and not such a financial risk ...
